Tasmania Lakes

One won't just enjoy the hilly surface area of Tasmania for the island is also encompassed by lakes. Such lakes enhance the landscapes of mountainous Tasmania. Lakes in Tasmania are both natural and man-made. They’re vital to the residents because most of these lakes are the source of electricity in the island. The following are the lakes within Tasmania mentioned alphabetically.

Lake Barrington
The man-made lake is located in Northern 40 km Davenport. It was built in Forth River in 1969 to provide a head of water for hydroelectronic power generation.

Lake Beatrice
You can find the lake in Eastern Side of Mount Sedgwick in the West Coast Range of Western Tasmania. It's 10.5 square kilometers.

Lake Burbury
It's an man-made lake situated in West Coast Range of Tasmania created by Hydra Tasmania. Its sources of water are from the rivers King Nelson, Princess and Eldon Rivers.

Lake Dora
The lake was formerly named Lake Misery. It's a salt lake in the West Coast Range of Tasmania. The lake is named after a famous explorer’s fiancĂ©e.

Lake Dove
The lake is small located near Cradle Mountain. It is comprised of 1.5 acres and about 6 ft deep.

Lake Edgar
If you'd like to view a lake shaped by natural fault scarp, visit Lake Edgar. Fault Scarp means land area displacement due to mobility of separated rocks. Fault scarp happened in the upper of Houn River down below Mount Anne in South West Tasmania which created two lakes of 1.4km surface area and a maximum depth of 3m.

Lake Filder
What makes Lake Filder distinctive is that it has two layers of water; anoxic salt water overflowed by fresh water. However, these two layers aren't mixing together that is why the lake is labeled as meromictic .These meronitic formation resulted from established hydro-electric power industry where fresh water of Gordon river moves to the lake.

Great Lake
Great lake is the second largest freshwater lake in Australia. The lake is semi natural and semi artificial. It has a surface area of 114 sq mi located in the central region of Tasmania, Australia. The lake is well suited for boating, camping, and for hydro-electric power reasons. The lake contributes to Tasmania attractions for it is a perfect place for trout fishing which is usually held in neighboring Liaweenee bay.

Lake Leake
The man-made lake was developed in 1880 gives water to the town of Campbell and eventually became an ideal spot for fishing trout. Its name if originated from a Legistative member of Tasmania named Charles Henry Leake.

Lake Mackintosh
The lake sets apart Sophia River and Mackintosh river. It's a Hydro lake nearby Tullah which is an hour from Burnie. Kayaking, swimming, boating, picnic, and fishing are the main pursuits in the river. Guided tours supplied within its plateau include horse riding, and driving tours.

Lake Margaret
Visit the oldest hydropower station in Australia - Lake Margaret .It was once the supplier of hydro-electric power for Mount Lyell Copper Mine and Quensland town in 1914. The hydro-electric plant was closed in 2006. The lake is situated in the northern side of Mount Sedwick in Tasmania Australia.

Lake Pedder
Lake Peddler is the largest natural fresh water lake in Southwest Tasmania, Australia. It was named after the First Chief Justice of Tasmania named John Pedder. The lake was flooded in 1972, thus 3 dams were impounded modifying the lake to be more able in generating hydro-electricity. Just like any other lakes, Lake Peddler is also a place for fishing trout. This also has a salmon pound.

Lake Pieman
It is one of Hydro Tasmania's lake located in Rosebery Tasmania. The lake permits boating and fishing. The shore near the lake prepares a spot for picnic, barbeque and camping.

Lake Rosebery
It is situated in Tullah, in the Western part of Tasmania. It was previously a part of Hydro Tasmania.

Lake St. Clair
The lake is the deepest lake in Australia with a maximum depth of 200m. It allows walking leisure along the bushwalks.

Recreational activities could be done within the lakes. Fish is the main Tasmania Attraction in the lake. A range of fishes can be found in the lake such as rainbow/brown trout, carp and catfish.
